According to Douglas Alton's Smith's "A history of the lute" this is a
manuscript "Intabolatura" of 1567 preserved in the Bavarian State Library
and possibly a copy of a lost printed work.
It constitutes a cycle of 48 pieces in 2 modes on all twelve scale degrees
starting with G gamut. Each set begins with a passamezzo antico and
saltarello in the minor mode followed by a passamezzo moderno and saltarello
in the major mode. Many of the dances consist of just a routine series of
chords.....although there are some divisions.....
In other words they are rather like the pieces in different keys found in
guitar books a bit later...

Subject: [LUTE] Giacomo Gorzanis' musical circle?
A while ago I came across a reference to a suite of pieces for lute
written in the mid 16th c by Giacomo Gorzanis, which I think is a
musical circle (in that it progresses through all 24 keys).
Does anyone know the title of this suite - and if there is a
recording anywhere - or a publisher of the music?
Many thanks if anyone can help...
Andrew
