I posted this right after the question was asked, and now see it only
went to Dennis, so here it is again, apologies for the repeat, Dennis,
and the delay, everyone else.

I've seen equally compelling arguments for "Doeland", "Dowland" and
"Dooland". Considering his heritage and whom he worked for, and the
amount of travelling he did, it is entirely possible that all three
were used, and that he never (being a professional diplomat) objected
to any.

And here I thought we'd be seeing a question about Dowland's know-how,
like "how'd he come up with the rule of 18's for fret placement?"
(recognizing that he probably didn't originate it; but he did describe
it in his forward to the Varietie of Lute Lessons.)
