Baruryn, the capital of the hetmanate Ukraine, was sacked by the Russian army under the command of Peter I's favorite prince Menshikov, 300 years ago today, after a brief siege. The defenders' commander was broken at the wheel, his deputies beheaded, all men were drowned in the Seym river, all women and children were bayoneted, 15000 in all. Afterwards the town was razed.

Pick up your lute, and play a Ukrainian tune today.
