Interesting to start this topic now, because this morning I just have a
question on YT by a mandolin player, playing since five years, mostly early
music, and wanting to take the lute because mandolin strings hurts his
fingertips...
Does some baroque mandolin use gut strings ? or were they all stringed in
metal ?

So, Eugene...or anyone else...tell us what you can about the baroque
   mandolin.

   1. Types of instruments - number of courses, construction features,
   string lengths, etc

   2. Modern luthiers, historical luthiers - names to look out for and
   why. Price ranges...

   3. Techniques

   4. Tunings

   5. Stringing - octaves, unisons, singles, double, triple(?)

   6. Repertoire - specific and non specific (treble instrument and
   continuo, for example)

Well, that will do for starters... ;-)
