If you're near a newstand take a look at "The Economist," mentioned
here by Herbert Ward. That cover
is the best reproduction I'd seen of the cherub/angel. (I've just seen
thumbnails of the "Angelo musicante") He's holding the lute close to
his body, almost caressing the instrumcent and has a smile of ecstacy
on his face. I really must make an effort to obtain the complete
picture. The artist is Il Rosso Fiorentino, aka Giovanni Battista di
Jacopo di Guasperre (1495-1540). For those interested in art and
music
relationships, there is a collection of essays by H. Colin Slim,
_*Painting Music in the DSixteenth Century*_ (Aldershot & Brookfiled,
Ashgate/Variorum, 2002). It includes essays on Francesco portraiture,
the lutenist's hand (short), Mary Magdalene: Musician and Dancer,
Concert Scenes from the Veneto, another Rosso painting with an
Arcadelt madrigal, etc.

Subject: [LUTE] Lute sighting

| We just got a few books from Amazon, including the new J.K.
Rowling
| book Beedle the Bard. On page 45 the drawing at the top of the
page is
| a lute - it has something like 5-6 strings and about 8 pegs. I
don't
| think the accompanying story has anything to do with lute music.
