I put the EXCEL spreadsheet on the Lute Society website. I agree it's flawed and have removed it. I'm afraid this post is quite long, but a little background may help. The seminar on September 13 showed attendees how the various software packages worked. We had an LCD projector and 6 presenters each had a 15/20 minutes slot. They demonstrated the features and entered the first 4 bars of the "My Lord Willoughby's Welcome Home" solo and the duet part if the software allowed. The presenters and softwares were: John Robinson on Wayne Tab Martin Shepherd on Fronimo Stewart McCoy on Django Anna Langley on Abc Tab Meic Goodyear on Harmony Assistant Nick Thomas on Sibelius There was also a segment on future developments, discussion and questions led by Tim Crawford & me. The presenter and I had discussed the format of the seminar for quite a few months before. One of the early ideas was a software feature comparison chart, but it soon became obvious that it didn't work too well. I was anxious to make the seminar and the chart as objective and non-judgmental as possible. Each presenter was a relatively expert user of their package and they all clearly thought theirs was the best. I knew we were in trouble when one presenter said "Oh, my package can do that. You just save the file as a ".???", upload this applet and then ................". I gave up hope when another said, "My package does all that and more, just put an "x" against everything". The comparison was flawed, but the seminar seemed to be universally well received and the attendees said it was a very useful exercise and clearly showed the strengths and weakness of each package. In the meeting we discussed the comparison chart and I agreed to post it in advance of a formal write-up of the seminar. That formal write-up should appear in a copy of the Lute News eventually, but is proving difficult to do for the same sort of issues that affected the comparison. If one person wrote it, it could be judgmental and transcribing the individual presentations is difficult. Some presenters had carefully documented presentations including, God forbid, PowerPoint slides, others little or nothing. Stewart McCoy's presentation for example was extremely unstructured and at first appeared chaotic, but observing the process of him remembering how his package worked was actually very illustrative of the strengths of Django. Sorry to have taken up so much space. In future you'll just have to come to the meetings. Airfares are quite cheap at present!
