Make a carrier.  Useing a thin blade, table saw a groove in a flat scrap
board which is just wide enough to grip the ebony leaving the edge to be
planed upwards and exposed as much as you want to trim off.  You can use a
file or a plane at an angle over the rest.  If the grip is good enough you
can even run it under the thickness planer on a very light cut at a slight
angle.
