Hello All,
A colleague at work (BBC Radio 3) is writing a doctoral thesis on historical
historical recordings, as it were - old recordings of early music. He has
an excellent collection of records, which he is in the process of
digitizing.
He's made some excellent transfers of a number of recordings which may be of
interest to us lutenists. They are out of copyright (at least, they are
here in the UK - I think the situation is different in the USA, so do be
careful that you are not breaking any local laws if you choose to download
them). The files are FLAC lossless audio - not compressed in the way that
mp3s are, but a completely faithful reproduction of the sound from the
vinyl. There are lots of shareware players out there that can cope with
FLAC files - Audacity, Winamp and VLC being three...
Walter Gerwig was, in my opinion, a very fine player - despite the dated
technique he gets a nice sound from his instrument. Very musical, if
favouring speeds which to me seem a little on the slow side, here he is
well-recorded and my friend Nick has cleaned up and de-clicked the transfers
with a light touch.
So here we have Archiv EPA 37078, with a couple of relative rarities:
Reusner Suite:

Hinterleitner Partita.rar:
http://www.mediafire.com/?y3ywnrjwn3d
If these prove to be of interest, I can also upload:
Archiv 13027a - Works by Mouton
Archiv AP 13022 - Bach suite BWV 995
Archiv AP 13031 - Works by Neusidler and Garsi da Parma
I hope that these are of interest - Nick has put quite a bit of work into
these transfers and I'm sure that he would value any feedback or comments -
I'll pass on any that I receive.
Also, if anyone can think of more old recordings of lute music, Nick would
be interested to hear about them, as they might fill gaps in his catalogue.
Best wishes,
Peter
