I believe on the Boss your reverb options are somewhat limited. The Boss is designed for pop style mixing and track bouncing. You can use it for classical but it isn't designed for that. You will be better off in the long run to get the Zoom H2--at about $150, getting an inexpensive audio program, like Samplitude LE or Reaper, getting the free reverb impulses "Lexi" from Noisevault, and the free Convoluter.reverb from SIR. For about $200 you can have a pretty sweet setup.
You would have to pay alot more to get something better, although for $3000 or so you could get a pair of MKH20s and a really nice preamp, like a Grace or an RME 400. That may seem like a lot, but that is like top of the line sound. Remember that these things have a lifespan of two years, and the Boss is 16 bit, so the reverb is going to be a bit bumpy. But hey, try it out! I do, however, recommend the eBay exchange. And always remember--never buy anything the salesperson recommends! The percentage of reverb depends on the room, the mics, etc, but start out at 12 percent/2.6 seconds--it really depends on the way the program is setup. They all use different numbers. I use -20db reverb gain (Sequoia, Samplitude scale) mixed in at 2.1 or 2,2 seconds, that is not really audible, most people use almost twice that. I have all my students get the H2, hey, it sounds good, and it is so cheap. If you don't like someone will buy it for what you paid for it. And if you want something better, you can still use it as a recorder, or start in with a Fostex FR2LE if you can still get one. The question is, do you want to spend our time recording or playing? And that's why the Zoom is so good. You pretty much push the button. dt > Some advice please from those of you who record a lot. > > > I'm taking the plunge to record my first piece, from Allans `Castles in > the Sky' CD, Dermott O'doud to be precise - and no it's not for public > consumption before you start terrorising me with copyright blah, blah > LOL J > > > Just wondering what reverb you guys use and how `wet' you set it.
