Have you shopped for a bassoon lately? Double bass? not enough lute players to justify a factory; working by hand really does set the minimum price at roughly that. for a maker who lives in america or europe and has realistic living expenses. Even with the house and car paid, even if I knew what I was doing, and could focus all my energies on luthiery I would be hard pressed to finish an instrument every week.
