Hi,
as Ron mentions lute kits offered by The Early Music Shop, let me
point out to all of you that an Italian lutemaker, Giuseppe Tumiati,
offers very interesting lute kits, as you can read on his website:
http://www.lute.net/news1.htm
Giuseppe does not mention any price, but I suspect his kits will be of
unbeatable quality, coming from an expert lutemaker.
And if you happen to like the hot Italian summer, you can even spend a
week in his workshop learning how to build one and go home with your
instrument.
By the way, I bought a Pakistani lute 5 years ago and was a total
disaster: Giuseppe accepted to rework it, making a new (and beautiful)
table. After his intervention the instrument became an acceptable study
lute, but I decided to sell it anyway to get a "true" lute.
For this reason, if you decide to go for a kit, I suggest you buy one
from a professional instruments maker, otherwise chances are that,
having spent money and considerable effort on building a lute, you'll
find yourself with what we friendly call a "padella" ("pan").
My two cents ;-)

Hi Friends,
As we are on the thread of lute-bowls for the would-be builder (if it
wasn't so difficult) I'd suggest a kit from The Early Music Shop.

They state the lute is designed in their own workshops, though I
suspect it is an import from Pakistan.
The bowl is ready-made, which from my own experience is the most
difficult part of making a lute.
Making it yourself will not have the same stigma as a Pakistani lute.
There are dozens of other lute-rose designs on the internet to
customize it to your own liking. Plus you will save at least 50% on
the cost of buying a new one ready made.
I have not bought anything from them myself, but notice they seem to be
more geared towards the lute than ever before. If I was to set about
making another, I'd probably buy their lute-pegs, which is another item
that could be difficult if you don't know a good turner.
Best Wishes
