That's what I get for trusting my memory. I located my notes, and it was a nylon G string, which makes more sense. AFAIK, the feather was just a decoration. As for detailed reasons, you'd best direct your question to Crawford. FWIW, he might well be on the faculty again at the 2010 LSA (not sure if they are that far along yet).
