Sting has a new album out, IF ON WINTERS NIGHT, and it has some of his own
archluting on it, among the songs by Purcell, Schubert, the Anon, and some
Folk stuff.
Quite well done actually.

Subject: [LUTE] More grist for the mill
Last night, after a 3-hour flight and a couple of hours of playing duets
with Travis Carey on his home turf, I set the clock radio to the only
classical music I could find quickly and went to sleep. This morning the
first thing that came out of the radio was a brief passage of violin music
in double stops, vaguely reminiscent of Biber or Muffat, fading immediately
to a version of Dowland's "Come Again" sung by a voice and in a style
unmistakably Stung, but bestowed with garlands of violin obligato in a style
unmistakably non-HIP. The announcer then explained (in French) that this
was at home with friends. I began to wonder on what planet I had landed....
After a brief search, it turns out that there is actually a newly released
album, primarily the work of Joshua Bell, collaborating with a series of
different musicians of various genres and genders. It is listed on Amazon
(US), but no audio samples are available, and it will cost you $27.98 to
purchase a copy to get the pleasure of hearing it. Only one of the tracks
is credited to Sting.
Regards,
Daniel
