Most of these solutions also require that you get an mp3 encoder
separately. Read the readme files and do what they say, it's not hard,
but it does require doing. The common free solution is the Lame
encoder, which is actually quite good, these days.

I haven't faced this problem since I acquired format factory, which
works quite well. Their instructions are pretty straight-forward.

Another option is to watch giveawayoftheday.com if you're on a windows
platform: they give away software (usually in beta, with no
freeupgrades) every day (hence the name). Often they give away audio
or video converter programs with anything -> mp3 capabilities.
Sometimes the new giveaway is actually an upgrade of programs they've
given away before, with improvements that resulted from feedback by
giveawayoftheday users, too!

Don't forget the portable solution:
VLC portable (and Audacity portable) http://portableapps.com/apps
These have the benefit that you can put them on a USB flash drive, and
carry them around. They don't require installing on a specific
machine, so you can use them, for instance, at the library!
