I had the opportunity to play with matched archlutes in the rehearsal for my concert today, and I have to say I was really surpised at the huge difference that having matched instruments makes in the sound. There just is nothing that sounds quite like that. I had played in groups with, for example, two theorbos by the same maker, but the models were always different in some respects. If I had the money, I would double down on all my instruments!
