Dear ones, I read about this a year ago, and it is finally available in the USA. I just received it, and I think it is a really nice recording of French lute music. It is entitled: Apollon Orateur: 17th Century French Lute Music, and it is on the label RAMEE, number is RAM 0904.
The recorded sound is very good, and the playing is elegant and delicate. What I find great is that he has an original lute, and 11-course lute, recently resotored, entirely strung in gut. The mensur is 76 cm (!!), quite large for an 11-course lute, and he tuned it a minor third lower, due to the length, making the treble string at "d". Any attempt to pitch it higher would result in broken trebles. Bailes' approach to this low tunigng is an excellent example on how This very low pitch is very refreching, to my ear. Also, I am only aware of a few pieces on this cd previously recorded. This is not a review, but merely an announcement of a cd which I find very welcome. Especially, with all the relatively new baroque lute cd's on original instruments strung in gut (such as those by Toyohiko Satoh and Jakob Lindberg) is a good thing. ed Edward Martin 2817 East 2nd Street Duluth, Minnesota 55812 e-mail: [email protected] voice: (218) 728-1202 http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1660298871&ref=name http://www.myspace.com/edslute To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
