I have to admit, I'm not thrilled with this CD and I've given it several listenings to try to "get" it, given the great stature of the performer. There is a huge amount of reverb, to the point where I would not have been able to tell it's gut strung, and can barely listen to it. There is also a lot of breathing noise. There is very little done to give the dance movements phrasing and shape; almost no variation in dynamics, tone or pulse. Not a great introduction to the already challenging French literature.
I have Bailes' excellent Musik fur zwei Lauten and it doesn't suffer from any of these issues of sound or performance, so I'm puzzled.
