You can buy an iPod Touch for not much more than some of the more expensive 
metronomes.  You can get the same apps as the iPhone for it, which, as David 
said, are inexpensive or free.  You will also be able to get the wonderful 
Cleartune app for all of $5, which will surely satisfy even the most hardcore 
early music nerd's temperament fetish.  Plus, you can play games on it.  I have 
(free) Skype on mine and use it to talk to my wife (for free) when I'm out of 
town. I've got videos of my kids on it.  I can get weather reports and 
restaurant reviews with it.  I think it may even have some sort of 
music-playing feature.  ;-)
