While on the subject of Louile, it is interesting that he adapted the monochord to a KLO (Korg Like Object) I suppose instead of a monochord it could be a tricorder. Anyway, this pocket sized device was used to tune harpsichords, or anything else. It also highlights the difference between "theoretical" and "actual" temperaments. A theoretical temperament may or may not have been used, but a KLO (there is a device made out of an organ pipe as well) gives us a step closes to practical use. The Loulie version gives us a system for French music around 1700, the are also a number of surviving organ pipe tuners as well. A citterm gives us a pretty good look at an actual temperament.
You can see the monochord map for this device here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Loulie%27s_tuning_chart.jpg and the pocket sized version here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Small_sonometer_colored.jpg To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
