In music with figures, which is the minority, you see sketches for meoldies.
One ofthe most famous is the beginning of the largo of the Xmas 
concerto of Corelli, and indeed in Corelli there are figures which 
shape a line which is not in the parts.
You see it in Bach concertos and continuo sonatas as well.
