If you look at a few hundred written out arpeggios for lute, they 
have a number of interesting features, of which continuous bottom to 
top is really pretty rare. The best ones bring out lines. and use 
dissonance as pivot points.
The instructions may (or may not) be for people who weren't that 
experienced with the technique. We can assume that an experienced 
player would ignore the instructions, just like I do when trying an 
electronic gizmo.
