There is no universal player for media that will always work, but as a general rule, it is best to use programs like the free VLC player for media. QT is pretty buggy. VLC runs on most platforms--here is the MAC version. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
If you are running firefox, which is recommended, install the mozilla plugin with the program. You should not need Streamclip, but it is a reasonably good converter, although I believe many Mac users like handbrake.
