Dear Arto and all,
I can confirm that the sound was indeed superb. Benjamin's unique
expressive vocal style was given force by his playing in standing postion, and
idealy helped by his excellent guts stringing with loaded Venice basses and
most
of the Meanes and Trebles, I believe, by Nick Baldock. The projection and
relevant sustain with excellent clarity that Benjamin was able to achieve
belies
any preconceived idea that gut is necessarilly for quiet playing.
The three instruments chosen for this repertoire, a 67cm Warwick by Martin
Haycock for the French music, a 71cm Tieffenbrucher by Stephen Gottlieb for the
pieces from Conradi, and a 13 course 70 cm rider lute by Martin Haycock for the
Weiss, probably correspond rather well historically; and even if the use of
loaded basses down to the 13th course on the 70cm lute might not quite fit in
with Mimmo's string theory, it can be justified within this concert framework,
where Benjamin was underlining similarities within the evolution of Baroque
lute
music.
A thoroughly enjoyable concert, which also allowed us a rare lute and string
tasting, perhaps appropriately in a "cave" that may well have been a wine
cellar. The humidity of such a structure, situated next to the Seine, has to be
a challenge with three lutes all strung in gut, but Benjamin pulled this off
rather well.
