As far as I know, the only gut-strung plucked instrument with octaves on
the basses arranged so that the thumb hits the high octave first is the
pesky guitar!

Really - it is not pesky at all - just a little different. Actually I
vaguely remember reading somewhere that there is evidence that the lute was
sometimes strung back to front...can't rember where.
One reason why I asked is because I was wondering whether the 6-course
lute was ever strung with octaves on the 5th and 6th courses but not the 4th
at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th
century. Received wisdom is that the lowest three courses were octave
strung but was that always the case?
