Blood knot is nice, true, but it creates bulks from both - the string and the leader. The beauty of using a thinner leader (may be synthetic) and a knot that wraps that leader around a thicker body of the string, is that there is hardly any bulk, and the knot does not get caught against the other strings. Most of extensions i get to do, for example, is to fit some very thick string that refuses to go into the peg. Then an unobtrusive knot is of essence, especially if one still wants the string to wrap around the peg. alexander r.

Unfortunately it requires 3 1/2 hands, just like soldering. To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
