Viol players will adjust the pitches of individual notes by the
placement and/or pressure of their fingers. Some can play unequal
temperaments with equal fretting, others need to adjust their frets
much more. I've played with consorts where they didn't like sharing
their instruments, precicley for that reason; when swapping
instruments, the players had to adjust the fretting to their liking,
not to the teperament used. On a lyrone, it's quite a different story
because you have to fret chords, where unequal fretting will surely
help playing in unequal temperament, as adjusting all the individual
notes in a chors by finger placement and/or pressure is beyond us
(beyond me, anyway).
