Nothing as sophisticated as tastini - just matchsticks wedged under the
frets (at the bass side of the neck) to tighten them. Don't we all do
   it?

I presume you are meaning "tastini"?
   see
   http://home.planet.nl/~ooije006/david/writings/meantone_f.html
but are they playing in different temperaments, as your previous mail
   suggests?

Apologies again - URL is very long so heres a short version:

As well as the varied tempering - look out for the matchsticks wedged
under the frets of some of these viols. We lutenists are no alone in
having problems with our gut frets loosening.
