Dear Arthur:
Thanks for your positive reinforcement. Since first encountering his
work, I have had tremendous respect for John Ward, and I'm certain that
his high standard of scholarship still lives with his students and
colleagues. For instance, your work in producing such insightful
transcriptions of the music of Francesco and Marco serve as an example
for us all. Playing 16th century lute music without an understanding
of modal counterpoint is really missing the point, and far too many
lutenists seem content with instructions as to where to place the
   fingers.
I knew I would omit some important reference in my select list of
articles but I narrowed it down to those on my shelves and in my file
cabinets. Obviously, the Dowland Miscellany is a glaring omission. It
so happens that Music & Context is on its way this week as an
inter-library loan, and I look forward to reading your contribution.
I think your suggestion for a more complete bibliography is an
excellent idea, and would be pleased to contribute to such a project
should LSA ask me to do so.
   Best wishes,
   RA
