I have a piece of suede leather (a scrap I picked up at a local leather shop)
that I place on my chest with the lute against it. I also use a strap. I found
this method after years of using a mat with the lit in either my right or left
knee and years of back pain. With the suede and strap I have no more back plan
and the lutes and theorbo feel quite stable.

The rubber mat I used was the non skid mat that is used in drawers. I found it
at in kitchen supplies. I would consider other methods though.

Regards
David
