It is of course an illustration of a concept
rather than a plausible device. Consider the
palaver involved in actually taking the
successive measurements. But a very nice lute.
Also have a look at page 100 with its Monument to
Commemorate a Victory over the Rebelious Peasants
and the associated text on page 99 for an example
of Durer's bitter sense of humour!
There are also a couple of other perspective
scenes in Part Two of 1538 which show his
lighter sense of fun. I'm thinking of the
voluptuous woman reclining on a table while the
elderly artist gazes at her through a grid with
his eye positioned by a sharp pointer. The whole
