Martyn,
If you have access to a LINUX system -- if not install a Ubuntu virtual machine... -- ImageMagick provides the tools you need and will export all pages from a PDF document to jpg, png or whatever format you chose. The command line syntax can as be simple as:

% convert my_document.pdf multiple_images_%d.jpg

However, you will have to tweak the syntax for best quality results - that depends on the PDF document you are processing. There are many examples of that syntax online. Note: depending on your LINUX basic installation, you may have to install ImageMagick and ghostscript. I think ghostscript provides its own syntax to do that particular job on its own and ImageMagick actually uses ghostscript to do the conversion job, but IM offers many more options and better integration with programming languages like PHP or perl. I can help with some of the details if you chose that route and needs a bit of help with the exact syntax.

    Thanks,

But won't I then have to import each jpg image individually? As said I
can do this already. The advantage as a pdf was that I thought I'd be
able to import the whole set of images (around 300) in one operation.

    regards

Do not try to import a pdf file,
convert the pdf into jpg first, thenopen as jpg.
Search the web for free software,.
    there are many programs available.
