Thanks and Happy New Year!
I've been looking again at that fascinating Carillon piece you sent me
ages ago. The 'double' doesn't seem to much connection with that of which
it is the 'double'?

I found this little piece on (medievalist) Marc Lewon's website a few
years ago. It was in a document - written in German - accompanying a
course that Marc Lewon led in 2006.
I don't speak German and, as clausulae are sacred vocal works, it might
be the case that Marc Lewon was just giving this piece as an
illustration of the music of the time. But Britannica online has this:
"In the clausula the late-medieval, dance-influenced system of rhythmic
modes found its first systematic application." So I'm guessing that Marc
Lewon saw this as a possible source of instrumental music. After all, a
lower line of a chunk from a chant with a faster moving top line seems
to have been popular throughout the medieval period.
