If, as Pieter says, the 'guiterne' (the medieval, lute-shaped gittern)
was still being played in mid 16th century France then maybe it was
sometimes played with the new 'guitarne' (figure-of-eight shaped body),
one plucking the tune, the other strumming:

This 'guitarne' is a actually a five-course guitar- or should that be
vihuela? We haven't gone over that for a while. Both instruments made by
