Dear lute wisdom,
has anybody tried so far to
reconstruct/perform Verstandige, handige (pp.212-213) from Adriaen
Valerius's Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck as a lute song? Valerius gives
as a source the 'Engels Prins Daphne', which is no other than Robert
Johnson's famous Almain and provides lute and cittern tablature
accompaniment which simply doesn't fit with the given melody part in
notation. There are many obvious mistakes and points where melody,
bars, harmony (you make your pick!) simply clash and serious editing
decisions have to be made. So, the question that arrises is if in such
cases we should try to make an acceptable version of Valerius
Verstandige with a lot of editing or is it better to play Johnson's
Almain and try to fit the Dutch text over it? In any case authenticity
is gone, but since Valerius didn't want to pay a proofreader as the
plethora of mistakes in Nederlandtsche gedenck-clanck reveal, I have to
make a choise and your valuable opinions are mostly welcome.
   Thank you all in advance
   Stathis
