Dear All,

The "alto-guitar" was constucted by Swedish guitar-maker Georg Bohlin.
The idea was to make it possible for guitarplayers to play lutemusic
without having to learn lute-techique. Normally you it's tuned like a
renaissancelute in g with 5 diapassons strings.
   All the best

Here is an attempt, no more than that, at the fourth of Ingvar
Karkoff's Fyra Stycken (Four Pieces), 1985:
[1]Ingvar Karkoff; lute piece IV (1985)
In the UK Lute Society's publications of modern music for lute both
Gilbert Isbin and Brian Wright say that their pieces are 'modern but
accessible', or 'contemporary but accessible' (and comment
separately on the level of technique needed). So what might
     'modern-but-not-so-accessible' be? Maybe Karkoff's pieces?
They were written for lute or alto guitar and, as far as I know, the
alto guitar is tuned like a guitar but with extra basses. I can't
find anything in the music which would suggest any particular
tuning. The piece I've had a go at keeps hinting at a G chord (well,
low G and a major tenth) so I thought it might be OK to play this
     one on a Renaissance lute.
