American Airlines smashed a fine classical guitar for me back in 1982. It
was AA flight insured, and even after my attorney contacted them they still
denied the claim. I had just gotten out of graduate school at the time and
I couldn't afford to fight it. I still get upset when I see an AA
commercial. I wish they'd gone out of business rather than surviving by
merging with U.S. Air. A friend of mine is a baggage handling manager for a
big airline. He told me the handlers actively try to break things,
particularly musical instruments. Get a rope!

Subject: [LUTE] Loaner for smashed lute

Hello all,

I'm writing with sad news. Last night the soundboard of my 13-course
lute was completely smashed after being valet-checked on a flight. (It just
happened to be my birthday. Thanks Delta.)

I have several solo lute concerts coming up in late January and
February. Is there anyone in the region of Rochester NY who would feel
comfortable loaning me a 13-course lute on which to practice and/or perform?

Thank you,

Chris
