The other option is to create an excel spreadsheet with all the calculations
in it and just use that. This is what I have done since I want to keep the
results of the calculations around as well. Not too complicated. The biggest
issue is having good numbers for the material density - which Arto has
provided.

David

Subject: [LUTE] Using my string calculators (answer to Leonard)

Hi lutenists,

Leonard Williams asked about security problems in using my "New String
Calculator" in his updated Mac. Because his domain seems to reject posts
from Helsinki University domain, here is my answer, which perhaps interests
also others:

I cannot name any specific reason for your problem, but here is some general
info:

When Oracle bought Java, they ceased to take proper care of the security
issues in Java applets. That is why many - me included - do not generally
allow Java in the browsers. Also many banks have re-programmed their systems
by other tools than Java.

My oldest calculator
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/Calcs/wwwscalc.html
is in JavaScript, which is totally different from Java, but that page
contains a tiny "sub-calculator" in Java for calculating unknown string
material density. The warning must be connected to that, I suppose.

The New Calc
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/NewScalc/
is all-in-Java, and much more complicated. It probably contains some strong
Java tools that nowadays can be used to security attacks? Well, I do know
that my program does not anything like that!
If you find a browser that runs this page, there is no harm to come - as far
as I can know. But do not generally allow Java!!

I by myself use only my very light JavaScript version
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/wikla/mus/Calcs/mc.html
It is not as fancy as the big Java version, but works well, when you know,
what you want. And there is no need to worry the security problems.

And remember: Do not allow Java in your browswer, when you go to unknown
pages!

best,

Arto
