Hi All,
Well we have ready-made dowel - a 16th C lutemaker would have had to
make the dowel itself, so I wouldn't expect to find much of this in old
repairs, etc. I think the Old Ones used the quickest, most convenient
methods, so perhaps we should do the same.
On the subject of end grain - I always preglue end grain so that the
glue doesn't just get sucked into the wood and starve the joint. To be
more specific, I apply hide glue, wiped on with a finger, and allow it
to dry completely, before attempting to glue a joint. For pegboxes,
this means the final assembly process is a "rub joint", using a thin
film of very hot glue which effectively remelts the glue which is
already there to some extent and acts almost like contact adhesive. No
clamps needed, and one of many reasons to use hide glue rather than
anything else.
