The Wolfenbuttel Lute Tablature must rank as one of the most important
recent discoveries of lute music. Tentatively dated c.1460, it
represents the earliest A music for lute known to exist. It may be the
only authentic source for both plectrum and 5-course lute. Its two
pages were found in the binding of another manuscript and preserves 5
pieces, 2 complete and 3 fragments, in a form of tablature notation
that probably predates German lute tablature. The music is contemporary
with the music of Conrad Pauman and concordant with some pieces found
in the Buxheimer Organ Book. A Marc Lewon has prepared a thorough
examination of this special manuscript and its music in the blogs that
James mentions, well worth a look by any lutenist. I find this
manuscript's music fascinating to study and play.
