Dear Friends and Colleagues, we are writing to let those who may not yet have heard the very sad news, that the lutemaker Stephen Gottlieb passed away last Friday, April 25th, after bravely struggling with a long illness.
Stephen was one of the greats of English lutemaking, and he will be sorely missed by many friends, colleagues and customers around the world. Originally trained as an architect, he taught himself lutemaking and originally operated from his flat in Parliament Hill, Highgate, before establishing a workshop near Old Street, which he worked from for many years before establishing another workshop nearer his home in Muswell Hill, north London. Stephen was a leading luminary of the Lute Society, and his early work measuring original instruments in collections across Europe inspired many others to do the same. Stephen's passing will be mourned by many. Respectfully, Stephen Barber and Sandi Harris. To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
