Does anyone know the significance of the first page of the ML book? It's

A right hand exercise?

That's not a tab staff. It is a 6 line mensural staff with a bass clef on the third line, and the "O"s are whole notes. The top line is middle C and the bottom, line is G. It is variations on the C major scale.
