Dear George and All,

I have used abrasive paper (silicon carbide) and I've tried using a knife, but it's not easy - the strings are very hard. I wish I knew of a better way, perhaps someone else out there has a good method? It doesn't matter if the strings are not cylindrical any more in that region, because all the thinned section (except a few mm in front of the bridge) is in a non-vibrating part of the string.

Unfortunately I won't be in Cleveland, though I have fond memories of my last visit there in 2004.

Best wishes,

Martin

Hello Martin,

I experiment with strings for my lutes and do not know how to "thin a string".
Can you send a reply to the Lute Network and share your secret with all of us. I have
tried sandpaper, razor blade and wire stripper with unsatisfactory results. I think many
others would like to know the best way.

Will you be in Cleveland this summer?

Thanks, George

I forgot to say - it is important to thin the KF strings - perhaps to
half their original diameter - where they go through the bridge and wrap
around themselves in front of the bridge. This not only makes them
easier to tie but improves the sound by making them more flexible in
this region.
