Thanks, that sounds helpful!

I would only string the first 4 courses anyway.
If I use the calculator, I wouldn't quite know how this feels.
Would that be a relatively high or low tension compared to other synthetic strings?
How is the plucking experience?

Cheers,
Tristan

Hi Tristan,

That Seaguar is likely to work out somewhere in the 6th course octave range for a 60cm G lute at 415. At 440, that G octave would maybe be too high tension with the Seaguar, but it might work out ok for the 7th course octave. To get a low G, F, or D fundamental (assuming 8 courses) you'd need something probably 2.5x the diameter of the Blue Label stuff. So, you're not likely to find fishing line in the diameters you'd really need for basses-- I searched myself, to no avail. Since the blue label is explicitly fluorocarbon, I'm just using the values given for "carbon" strings in this string calculator (which you can customize for your own instrument) and the Seaguar website:

https://www.niskanenlutes.com/index.php?p=stringcalc

I've used fluorocarbon fishing line for a chanterelle before-- I can't recall if it turned out to be 25 or 30 lb test, but I still have the spool, and yeah-- each string would cost half a cent... but they aren't always "true". I have first batch Aquila CD type basses on now (and they are working just beautifully, despite what you may have read), but I used to use the Savarez for fundamentals on 6-8th courses. I still use savarez for my 5th course Cs.

I hope that at least some of this is of some use!

    Hi Fishing-Lutists!

I can get a hold of Seaguar Blue Label which has diameters that hold
up to 80lbs. Can I use those for the lower register? I believe they
are not monofilaments, but pure fluorocarbon.
How would I know which diameter is which strength?
    How do you string octaves?

    Cheers!
