I think this is actually the second-best reason for ruling out the ceteroni.  
If their purpose is to sound underworldly, they would play in the same 
ritornello at the end of Act II, when Orpheus is going into Hades, rather than 
when he has returned from it.  

Of course, Monty may have thought they contributed a “fresh light of day” 
sound.
