Paul O'Dette quotes the source in his article in the proceedings of the International Lute Symposium in Utrecht in 1986. It is a letter dated 14 March 1524 discovered by Jessie Ann Owens which refers to Francesco using 'two silver thimbles inside of which were two small quills'. The letter was from Antonio Costadili to Duke Alfoso d'Este and is in the state archives in Rome (Carteggio Ambasciatori, Busta 29, 198/II/25, fol.2r.).

Matthew

Somebody asked me if I knew of the source (from 1526?) that claims that

I know that Douglas Alton Smith quotes the story but the person who
asked wants to know the actual source.

I don't recall hearing this odd story!
