Anna Kowalska & Anton Birula - 13 course baroque lutes
Warmest wishes, Anna & Anton
Lute music has always been of great cultural value and, in high
society, was the subject of much fascination. In earlier days, having
an outstanding lutenist at court was a sign of prestige and refined
taste. Thanks to Prince Alexander Benedykt Sobieski's patronate Sylvius
Leopold Weiss - a Silesian-born lutenist and composer who was in the
service of the Polish prince - he could travel to Rome and meet top
leading Italian composers of that time, such as Alessandro and Domenico
Scarlatti or Archangelo Corelli, as well as Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, a
great patron of music and art. This so strongly influenced the style
and musical development of this composer that the most advanced and
beautiful music of lute history was created during this era. Yet, lute
music was not something for everybody, but rather a 'luxury exclusive'
The twentieth century brought changes and, together with that, a true
revival of the lute family of instruments and their presence back on
stage: Solo lute recitals were rather frequent events. However, with
the advent of the twenty-first century, the lute recital is again a
rarity due to global commercialization that has changed many aspects of
our lives today.
It is true that the lute was not a very commonly used instrument, and
that is why lute players needed benefactors who had sensibility and of
course finances.
Today finding funds for organizing concerts of lute music, and
especially making recordings, takes all the time and energy and leaves
little for practice and creativity.
We decided to step out of commercial market rules, and produce our
records as a small recording label.
Purchasing our CDs, you support the LUTEDUO, and become a patron of the
art in a certain way, just like in good old days. These money goes
directly to the new unique recording and concert projects...
Yours, truly,
The Luteduo (Anna Kowalska & Anton Birula)
