Dear Denys, Thanks for this info, and sorry for the late reply.
The edition I had asked for (and kindly received from Rainer and a few others) is this earlier edition that Wyssenbach copied. (Borrono-Milano 1546 (8)). The problem was that the copy most often available online is in barely readable condition. In this print, the ornaments are not enclosed in these signs: ( ), as in 1548 (6) and Wyssenbach. The extra number for the ornament is just added to the tab without any indication, and one has to figure out which notes go together. There will be, say, a row of nine 8th notes in a measure and one will be the ornament. Anyway, at first glance I didn't see any ornaments, so wondered if I had the right book. In the end I received a very good copy, and could see clearly where the extra numbers coincided with the Wyssenbach ornaments. The excerpt from the 'regola' at the beginning of the print is translated by Poulton as follows: 'where a circle is found ( ), two fingers must be placed on the string and the finger on the lesser number must be held firm. Pull down the string with the finger which is on the higher number as if the voice were notated on the lesser of the two frets. This is done because the lute will sound sweeter. But the said circle is one stroke only.' She notes that in Wyssenbach's Francesco / Borrono print of 1550 'the same half circles that had appeared in Borrono's compositons in the earlier book' are reproduced. Thanks very much Rainer. My memory is apparently not so good these days. I remember now having seen this in an unreadable copy. This one is better. But what version did Wyssenbach use for his ornamented edition?
