It's easy. You transfer data onto the ipad by purchasing things via the Market app. More seriously -- I think you can transfer files by connecting it to an Apple laptop running iTunes and then pairing them up. (ie. You can transfer more than just music) Alternatively, have you tried some of the ipod-compatible Linux tools? They might work with the ipad too.
