FWIW, when I transferred to Carey BGS for matriculation, back in 2000, they said I had to have a craptop. It was bullshit, I never had any legitimte need for it; all the IB textbooks were in dead tree format. It just added another five kilos to the already hefty backpack weight.
On the plus side, it meant I had a computer of my very own to blow away Windows and install Linux on, so I guess the silver lining is it helped me break into FOSS.
