You can deinstall plymouth(which has all the boot magic in it) and leave just the libplymouth2 there, I think. Thanks for the GRUB related notes. I recently gave up on an attempt to understand what Ubuntu's GRUB is doing. I am tempted to go for a handwritten /boot/grub.conf with the basics next time. Or I install the FreeBSD boot loader to start Ubuntu;-) Apologies for mentioning systemd last time. Ubuntu has upstart.
